A1 Size: Dimensions in mm, cm & Inches | Printbox London
Jun 26, 2026

A1 paper measures 594 × 841 mm, or 59.4 × 84.1 cm. In inches, that is approximately 23.4 × 33.1 inches. These are the finished dimensions, whether you use A1 for a poster, presentation or drawing.

A1 dimensions at a glance
| Unit | Width × height |
|---|---|
| Millimetres | 594 × 841 mm |
| Centimetres | 59.4 × 84.1 cm |
| Inches, approximately | 23.4 × 33.1 in |
For landscape orientation, swap the measurements: 841 mm wide × 594 mm high. Turning the sheet does not change its paper size.
How big is A1?
An A1 sheet is just under 60 cm wide and just over 84 cm tall in portrait orientation. To picture it, eight A4 sheets arranged in two columns and four rows cover approximately the same area.
Before choosing A1 for a London shop display, event notice or presentation, measure the available space. Allow room for any frame or mounting arrangement, and consider how far away people will stand when reading it. A large sheet still needs clear headings and uncluttered information.
A1 compared with A0, A2, A3 and A4
A1 belongs to the ISO 216 A-series. Each step down the series roughly halves the sheet area while keeping the same proportions. Whole-millimetre rounding accounts for small differences in the dimensions.
| Paper size | Dimensions in mm | Area compared with A1 |
|---|---|---|
| A0 | 841 × 1189 | Twice the area |
| A1 | 594 × 841 | Reference size |
| A2 | 420 × 594 | Half the area |
| A3 | 297 × 420 | One quarter of the area |
| A4 | 210 × 297 | One eighth of the area |
A1 is larger than A2 and smaller than A0. It has eight times the area of A4, not eight times its width or height.
What is A1 paper used for?
A1 is commonly used for posters, architectural drawings, engineering plans and presentation displays. Its larger format gives room for images, diagrams and headings that would feel crowded on a smaller sheet.
For a poster, focus on one main message and make essential details easy to find. For a technical drawing, check the required scale: fitting a drawing to the page can change that scale.
Setting up artwork for an A1 print
- Set the finished size correctly: use 594 × 841 mm for portrait or 841 × 594 mm for landscape.
- Check bleed separately: A1 dimensions describe the trimmed sheet, not any extra artwork beyond the edges. Confirm the required bleed before exporting.
- Keep important content away from the edge: leave a suitable safety margin for text, logos and essential details.
- Check image quality at the final size: enlarging a small image can make it appear soft or pixelated.
- Confirm file requirements: check the required format, resolution and colour settings before sending artwork to print.
If enlarging A4 artwork to A1, the linear scale is approximately 283%. Review the enlarged file rather than assuming every image will remain sharp.
A1 size FAQs
What is A1 size in centimetres?
A1 is 59.4 × 84.1 cm in portrait orientation, or 84.1 × 59.4 cm in landscape.
How many A4 sheets make A1?
A1 has approximately the same area as eight A4 sheets. Small differences arise from rounding the standard dimensions to whole millimetres.
What is A1 size in pixels?
Pixel dimensions depend on resolution. At 300 pixels per inch, an A1 image is approximately 7,016 × 9,933 pixels. This is a conversion example, not a Printbox artwork requirement; confirm the appropriate resolution for your print.
Is an A1 poster the same size as A1 paper?
Yes. A standard A1 poster has finished dimensions of 594 × 841 mm. Bleed, a frame or mounting can extend beyond that finished size.
